**UPDATE** - King is currently placed in a rescue with the connections and abilities to place him in a forever home. He was with us from April of 2003 to April of 2004. He is a healthy boy now and heartworm-free. Thank you to all of you who helped him get through his heartworm treatment. He is very grateful! ~8/8/2004

SAVE the KING!

King's story....(4/29/2003)

My husband and I were on our way to the Beltane Brouhaha just this past Saturday, driving along I85 and all of a sudden we passed the most beautiful creature running along side the cars. A male Shepherd mix. (Attaching pictures) He was quite emaciated and had some ticks which we removed and we've since bathed him twice. He's been relaxing at our place since Saturday evening and was actually our escort for the Beltane Brouhaha (as you can see in the pictures of him and I) and even around the running children, the loud noise and many people he was SO behaved! There was even a Rotweiler there who wanted to start an argument with him and he simply ignored him! On our way there we had to pick up a leash, collar, food, bowls and water since he had NONE of these. Not a collar...a tag...nothing! He was in an area that had no close houses near and we think he HAD to have been out for quite some time. Going from his condition we made some of these conclusions:
1) Even with the grey fur around his face, his teeth are IMMACULATE and paws and ears are still too large for the rest of him so he is probably fairly young and still growing.
2) The grey tells us he's been out for a while and probably has not had the BEST life causing stress.
3) His ribs and spine were sticking out so he's been on his own a while and not getting the food he needs.

We have tried contacting the following to these reactions:
Project HALO: Charlotte NC: No room available
Charlotte Animal Rescue: No room available
Charlotte Humane Society: No room available
Tri-County Animal Shelter: No Room available for large dogs
German Shepherd Rescue ! in Raleigh NC: No room available

We are in NOOOOOOOOO way taking King to the pound to be thrown in a "cell", taken out... thrown back in a "cell" again just to be decided he's not good enough so they may as well put him down! NO WAY! He is also great with our other dogs. He just sniffs and moves on all the time wagging his tail. They are both female which might make a difference. He does have a vet visit scheduled for today around 5:30. We want to rule the possibility of any diseases he may have picked up while sowing his wild oats. But this animal truly is a great one. He is so mild-tempered for the life he's lead and who knows what countless disadvantages he's had to encounter.

UPDATE...(5/1/2003)

MM All,

Well, we brought King into the vet yesterday...which, by the way, ANYONE who has a pet and is looking for a vet (or a better vet), PLEEEEASE consider the Paw Creek Animal Hospital on the corner of Mt. Holly Huntersville & Mt. Holly! They were SO AMAZING and HELPFUL and did everything they could to help King. To start it off, while in the waiting room, the biggest TICK I’d ever seen fell off him! The vet could not believe it and said that he must have been out for MONTHS to have a tick that size (sorry to disgust you). It just goes to show another ...family... that found no problem throwing a child out into the wilderness! Well, although everything seems ...normal... on King except for his hookworms which we are currently treating, King is HEARTWORM POSITIVE. (Grrr!) Like I’ve said before, it’s a good thing there was no tag on him to lead me back to the "owners" of King, even though that would have shown the slightest shred of responsibility. The vet gave us a few options...one of which was to "humanely". put him to sleep because it would be better than him running out on I85 again. Although this might be an option for some people it is BY FAR not an option for my husband and I. King deserves his second chance and we WILL be the ones to give it to him. They aged him to be about 5 - 8 years old. Hard to tell. We’ve also been in contact with a rescue that is willing to try and find him a home but he will need to be treated first and we need to remain his foster parents for the time being. We have no problems with the foster parent part as he is a REAL sweetie to be around but the financial part is a bit of a kick in the butt at this time. We are going to try to come up with all that we can but we are reaching out to all the animal lovers out there that might be able to help in even the smallest of ways. Anything will help. As many of you know I am a part of an organization called P~A~A~N (Pagans Against Animal Neglect) and next month (May) possibly on the 10th, we are holding a picnic here in Charlotte to raise cans for the Charlotte Humane Society. Well, we would also like to take this day to help raise funds for King as well. A "Save The King" picnic. I’m curious as to how many of you might be interested in this. To come out and bring your dogs if you have any to meet other like-minded individuals for a fun-filled day of food, events, enjoying the sun and enjoying the company of your fur-babies as well as to meet King, The Mighty. Meet the guy who took our heart on first glance. I’m sure we will still have him by then as he will be somewhat hard to place at his age and condition. SO I pose this question to you: Does this sound like something you would like to take part in? Even if you can’t help financially, you can come out and enjoy the day and meet King. Either way he will get his treatment but it will be the difference of us paying for it alone (VERY difficult) or with your generous help. Unfortunately it won’t be tax-deductible but we would be more than happy to put you name up on the P~A~A~N site ( http://www.supportpaan.com/ ) and it is something that you would feel like you are making a difference at. I’m really hoping to hear responses on this as we need the replies to decide whether the picnic is worth while. So let me know… you can email me through the group or directly @ Sinovess@supportpaan.org . I look forward to hearing from all of you. Thank you for taking the time to let King into your heart.

P.S. THANK YOU to all those who responded with suggestions and interests in King. As he is heartworm positive, it would not be right to give him to a shelter and not tell them or to adopt him out to a family in his condition. Before we do any of those, we would first like to try to make sure he is the healthiest King he can be. Thank you again and please let me know if you will be interested once he is treated.

Many Blessings,

~ MARCH ACCOMPLISHMENTS ~

The month of March was a good start for P~A~A~N! Below you'll find some of the efforts put forth by members (either as an individual or a group) to help local animals in their area.

::: Charlotte, NC ~ The P~A~A~N-NC group was encouraged to collect aluminum cans for the Charlotte Humane Society. Throughout the month Charlotte Pagans gathered their resources to get as many cans as they could which end the month with a gathering at one of the co-founders house to group together their collections. The amount was great and will be brought to the CHS on behalf of P~A~A~N. Thank you to those that took part in the collection to help the animals at the CHS. It will be used for refunds to help pay for food for the habitants of their facility.

::: Louisville, KY ~ "We rescued two dogs from a very poor environment and placed them in great homes. (Gordon and Rosco) We placed a total of 5 dogs altogether. Also we donated 200 lbs of food, toys and blankets to a local shelter. I know its not a lot but its a start."

Blessings
~Kim

::: Illinois ~ "It's not much, but through networking with my boss, her friends, and an ex wife we've placed my coworker's pit-bull with a wonderful loving family. We have also "rescued" a horse that now lives at my boss's farm. Her owner was going to put her down because she wasn't eating and doing very poorly, severely arthritic and just too old and her owner didn't want her to suffer. We've taken her off her arthritis meds, fixed her teeth and currently have her on a light med to help a stomach ulcer."

Blessings to all and have a good weekend!

::: Charlotte, NC ~ "This month has been a long and hard one especially with Wolf Wolf, my male black cat. He has had a urinary track infection that he is recovering from that he could of died of very easily from if we hadn't
taken him to the vet when we did. But after $600 which we're still paying on and lots of care and attention he is finally getting back to his old self. If it would of been $6000 I probably would have done the same because to me they are my children and you don't put a price on getting or keeping them healthy. They are your children, your familiar, and your best friends and to have them suddenly gone from your life or put in a hospital is as devastating as if it were a human. Some people may not agree who have children and that's fine but for me I can not have children of my own so they are very special to me. Thanks to all who sent blessings for Wolf Wolf."

Blessed Be

~Deborah-FireLynx68

::: Athens, GA ~ "This month I've rescued 4 rats - one of whom is pregnant and one of whom was too young to be weaned and is currently in with my momma rats in hopes they will give him some milk.  I _think_ it's a boy, but
it's too young to be certain.  It's eating a bit, so I guess it's about 2 1/2 - 3 weeks old and should be fine."
Be well
~Starr

::: Tennessee ~ "In TN Kim and I found homes for 5 lab mix pups. Of course I kept 2 myself. I also think Kim has taken in more ferrets. She is also trying to help with the hunting dogs as of right now."
